Fatima Gerendas is a Guatemalan singer-songwriter based in Vienna (Europe) and OUTCAST is her new EP, which includes five songs in english with a pop/rock/drum&bass/cinematic music mixture. These songs, characterized by a “cinematic” sound with various musical influences and strong, sociocritical lyrics, state reasons why someone could feel like an outcast by presenting topics such as migration, physical illness, mental illness, peer pressure and failure.
The name of the EP “OUTCAST” is a noun with which Fatima Gerendas has been described many times, but she learned to see her otherness as a quality that makes her unique and knows that there’s nothing bad about being an outcast. In fact it makes one stronger and helps us to learn to love others just the way they are. Through her music, she hopes to encourage people to make a difference.
Her songs present emotions inspired by otherness and describe how social norms negatively affect the way we think and feel about outcasts. She believes it is necessary to learn to accept differences and would like people who feel alienated from society to reveal the traits of their otherness, because they are as valuable as anybody else. The core message she has to the world is: “Be true – be you, and be open to people who are different from you!”
